Dwight Mackintosh
1906 - 1999, USA
With postnatal brain damage, he was diagnosed as mentally retarded. His life was a long series of stays in psychiatric institutions. However, in 1978 on his doctors’ recommendation he left the institution and attended the Creative Growth Art Centre in Oakland, which gave him a certain bloom.
He developped a rapid and spontaneous drawing style with pencil or ballpoint. Cars, buses and human bodies are his repetitive themes. These human bodies are drawn with a single continuous line, straight or concentric, and are usually having sexual relations. The picture is then overwritten with an unreadable text.
